The order matters

Duct sealing: why it comes first in a Phoenix attic

Short answer: seal first. ENERGY STAR puts typical duct leakage at 20 to 30 percent of the air you pay to cool, and nothing wrapped around a duct stops a leak. Duct sealing is done with our licensed HVAC partner, and the free inspection shows you where your ducts stand before anyone proposes anything.

Two different problems

What does duct sealing fix?

Sealing closes the gaps where cooled air escapes: loose joints, pulled-away boots, tape that gave up years ago. A leak means air you already paid to cool never reaches your rooms. In a Phoenix attic that can top 150 degrees, that air is gone the moment it leaves the duct.

How it's done

How does duct sealing work?

Our licensed HVAC partner seals the leaks from inside the ductwork. Crushed or disconnected runs are a different job: we find them during the inspection and get them fixed with our licensed HVAC partner. The gaps where duct boots meet your ceiling are part of our air sealing work, sealed from the attic side.

The system order

What's the right order for a Phoenix home?

1
Look.

The free inspection covers thermal imaging over your ceilings, insulation depths and duct condition, with photos.

2
Seal the ducts.

Done with our licensed HVAC partner.

3
Seal the ceiling.

Air sealing closes the gaps between your rooms and the attic.

4
Insulate.

Insulation goes down last, over a sealed ceiling and sealed ducts.

Wrapped ducts

What about insulating the ducts?

We don't insulate ducts. Insulation around a duct slows heat through the duct walls; it does not stop air leaking out of the joints, and once a duct is wrapped, the leaks underneath are harder to find and fix. If you're weighing a quote to wrap or coat your ducts, ask whether anyone found and sealed the leaks first.

Questions

The short answers.

Do you seal ducts yourselves?

Duct sealing is done with our licensed HVAC partner. We find the problems during the inspection, show you the photos, and include the sealing in your quote.

How do I know if my ducts leak?

Common signs are rooms that never cool down, weak airflow at some registers, and dust that keeps coming back. The free inspection checks duct condition in the attic and shows you what we find.

Is duct cleaning the same thing?

No. Cleaning removes dust; sealing is what stops it from coming back. We clean ducts through the registers; ask about it when we confirm your inspection.
